Curfew relaxed in Malpura, Tonk

E-Mail this report to a friend

The indefinite curfew clamped on violence-hit Malpura and Tonk in Rajasthan was relaxed on Sunday for a longer duration as the situation improved there.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will visit Malpura and adjoining Tordisagar village on Monday with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Inspector General of Police (law and order) Harnarayan Meena said the curfew was relaxed for nine hours from 0900 IST in Tonk, the district headquarters, while the relaxation was allowed for three hours from 1500 IST in trouble-torn Malpura.

This curfew relaxation was the second in Malpura and the third in Tonk in the last seven days.

He maintained that the situation was "improving" in both places and no untoward incident was reported.

Curfew was clamped on Malpura on Monday evening following communal clashes that left 12 persons dead. Tonk was brought under curfew the next day.
