Hundreds hit by contaminated water in MP

One person has died and several hundreds have taken ill after drinking contaminated water in 15 villages in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.

Nearly 70 of them, who complained of vomiting and loose motions over the last few days, are undergoing treatment in government hospitals at Jowra and Morena. Official sources said the villagers were suffering from acute dehydration in Jowra tehsil.

Three medical teams from Jowra and one from Morena have been sent to the villages, sources said, adding that a medical camp had been organised at severely hit Kumeri village.

Jowra sub-divisional officer Vikas Mishra said villagers were suffering from waterborne diseases by drinking contaminated water.

However, chief medical officer R K Kulshreshtha said water was just one of the causes; the others included a heatwave, which had caused dehydration.

Admitting that treatment could not be given to the affected despite a primary health centre at Kumeri, he said action would be initiated against those abstaining from duty.

Most of the affected have been administered primary medical care.
