Former TN health secretary gets 1 year RI for corruption

E-Mail this report to a friend

A special court in Madras hearing cases of corruption under the previous All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu today convicted Indian Administrative Service officer and former health secretary K Inbasagaran in a disproportionate wealth case and sentenced him to one year's rigorous imprisonment.

Special Judge-1 S Sambandam also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Inbasagaran. On default, the officer will have to undergo another three months' rigorous imprisonment.

The judge held that the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, which investigated the case against Inbasagaran, had proved beyond doubt that he had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 5.44 million during 1978-1993, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The judge, however, suspended the sentence till March 15 on Inbasagaran executing a bond for Rs 10,000, to enable him to file an appeal in the high court.

In September 1993, income-tax officials raided Inbasagaran's house in the city and seized Rs 3 million in cash, seven gold biscuits and $1,118 US. Based on this report, the DVAC filed a case and charged the officer under section 13(i)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
