No plans to let govt employees join RSS: PM

E-Mail this report to a friend

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said there were no plans to let central government authorities join the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Speaking at Patna airport there were no changes contemplated in the current laws. The Sangh had earlier said it had not called for a removal of the ban.

The controversy had grown after the BJP governments in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh lifted the ban on their staff participating in RSS activities.

RSS chief Rajinder Singh had said that his organisation had never made a "formal or informal" request to this effect to the government. He had said it was unfortunate that some parties were trying to politicise the issue.

Earlier, Vajpayee had warned the Hindu groups pushing for the revocation of such a ban that their efforts could destabilise the government and bring about its downfall.

Some of the BJP's coalition partners had also threatened to quit the National Democratic Alliance if the Centre revoked the ban on the RSS.
