Ten killed in Kashmir violence

Ten people, including a Border Security Force assistant commandant and seven militants, two of them foreigners, were killed in Kashmir since Sunday evening while, in Srinagar, security forces averted a bomb blast.

Official sources said that militants attacked a security force search party at Kursoo, about five km from Srinagar on Monday afternoon.

BSF personnel returned fire and in the shootout, assistant commandant Pathania lost his life after killing the foreign militants.

Security forces also killed four militants in a clash at Sarthal. Militants also killed locals Babu Ram and Santosh Puran in their houses at Dilli on Sunday evening.

Militants planted a 10-kg improvised explosive device near the gate of the central telegraph office and the telephone exchange. A guard saw it and called the police bomb disposal squad to defuse the bomb.

The device, fitted with a gas cyclinder, was placed in the drain, the sources said and could have caused extensive damage if it had exploded, sources said.

Meanwhile, BSF soldiers killed a militant at Adigam in Kokernag area of Anantnag district Sunday night. His accomplice managed to escape.

Militants shot at and critically wounded a Jammu and Kashmir police constable at Khannabal in south Kashmir on Sunday evening.

Security forces captured a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant and recovered one machine gun, a grenade launcher, nine grenades, two remote controlled devices and two magazines at Armpora in Srinagar on Monday morning.

Security forces also arrested a militant with a sniper rifle, four magazines and five rounds at Shatpora Kupwara on Sunday evening.
