Message: It is with tears in my eyes I bid adieu to Ustadji... The news came as a complete shock. His loss is not only a loss to Indian classical music but to Humanity as well! His ever smiling and graceful face will linger eternally in the minds of his numerous fans. Last time I saw him performing, was in way back in 1993, in Dover Lane Music conference accompanied by his illustrous son, Zakir. What a concert it was, they started at around 2am when most of the crowd was wee bit feeling drowsy and in no time we all were shaken out of our slumber, with rhythm beyond compare!! He had played with the same gusto like his son and he was 75 then!! Ustadji, thank you for all the music and for all bliss that you have offered us through your sheer genius! May your soul rest in peace! Amen.

Message: Music knows no bounds, no barriers. Unlike any other form of devotion, this form invites & enchants all & sundry, irrespective of caste, creed, colour and religion. I think music should be recognised as a form of devotion, a universal form of religion. Ustadji was a devout musician who enchanted everyone with his mesmerising fingers dancing on the tabla. His music remains & will remain a reminder of his genius & the inheritance that he has passed on to his son, another Ustad, which beats in the heart. We all salute u ustaadji.

Message: With respects to ammaji, and the family of Ustab Khan Sahib,
It is with great sorrow that we received the news of the passing away of the guru of all tabla players. We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unnecessary turn of events leading to this calamity. We hope that the family finds the strength to survive this tragedy, and keep alive the spirit of Khan Sahib. Our prayers are always with Khan Sahib's family, and for peace in these moments of grief. We had several grand opportunities to hear the magic of Khan Sahib in the Bay Area of CA. And, also to visit with him up-close in Zakir-ji's classes in Berkeley. I will cherish the magical moments of the 75th birthday celebrations that were arranged here at the Palace of Fine Arts. The spirit and sounds of tabla are alive in the world due to the untiring efforts of Khan Sahib. With deep regrets and condolences to the immediate family, -- Aditya.

Message: In a musical concert, by design, the status of the 'accompanying instrument' is meant to be subserviant to the main instrument. Lesser accompanists often try muscling in (playing at higher decibels than warranred and so on) to make their presence felt. The beauty of Ustad Alla Rakha and now that Of Zakir Hussain is that they ensured the subservience. In fact, added vibrance and vigour to the main instrument. And if they drew attention to themselves which they invariably did, it was through the sheer harmonious and masterful rendition of their taals. May this tradition grow and prosper with even more enegy and magic. Sincere homage to the Ustad Alla Rakha Saheb and the very best to his worthy sons and their families.

Message: Since 1984 Abbaji had come to our house in Pittsburgh many times. He was one of the nicest persons we have met. Humble and a caring person. Once, he stayed with us for two weeks since he was not well. We took care of him, took him to a dentist, took him to various physicians, taught him how to measure his blood sugar, got his blood pressure under control. He used to make his own lunch. We learned from him a few recepies. He was an excellent cook. Always concerned about his daughter, Raiza and his son Zakir. He used to talk about them at length. His human touch was infectous. He was a gem of an individual. So well known, but so humble. We will always remember his for his music and his humility. We are saddened by his death. We felt that we have lost somebody who had touched our heart....Balwant and Vidya

One has not had the privilege of having listened to Ustadji in person. But whatever one has heard of his music, I bow to the maestro & through this message, wish his family strength, courage & support in this time of grief. Ustad Zakir Hussain -- we look forward to you to carry forward the legacy left behind by your father & Guru .
