LTTE 'plotting to kill' Kumaratunga

E-Mail this report to a friend

P Mohan Das in Colombo

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is plotting to assassinate President Chandrika Kumaratunga before she invites them for peace talks, the state-run Dail News reported today.

A front page report in the daily, quoting intelligence sources, said the objective of the plot is to kill the president before the political solution is implemented and take over the administration of the north-east.

The report also attributed the LTTE's apparent keenness for peace talks to a desire to conceal the plot from the outside world.

In her independence day message to the nation yesterday, the president outlined her government's desire to invite the LTTE for talks in the process of constitutional reform.

The government is expected to consult all political parties on the peace process before inviting the LTTE for talks.

The LTTE made an abortive bid to assassinate Kumaratunga on December 18 using a woman suicide bomber. She escaped with an eye injury. Early this month, another attempt was made on her life when her security staff intercepted a letter bomb.
