Lashkar 'district commander' shot dead in Srinagar: AFP

The police said on Wednesday that they had shot dead a militant commander with links to the group that conducted a daring attack on the Red Fort in Delhi last week.

They also arrested three other people in a series of raids, carried out despite the current suspension of counter-insurgency operations against militant groups in Kashmir.

The police identified the dead militant as Abu Sufian -- a Pakistani national belonging to the hardline, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba militant group.

A police spokesman said Sufian was killed when he and another militant opened fire on a police patrol on the northern outskirts of Srinagar.

"The patrol returned fire, killing Abu Sufian," the spokesman said, adding that Sufian was a Lashkar "district" commander.

"Based on documents recovered and other investigations, it has been established that he was in close touch with Lashkar militants who had forced their way into the Red Fort," a police spokesman said. "The police raided a number of locations and laid ambushes last night in Srinagar."
