Fourteen drown, 24 injured in TN road mishap

In one of the worst road mishaps in Tamil Nadu in recent times, at least 14 persons, including two children were drowned and 24 injured when a bus carrying a marriage party fell into a lake at Singarapettai village in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The ill-fated bus, carrying 56 persons, collided head on with a sugarcane-laden lorry, before plunging into the lake, police said.

The marriage party from Bangalore was proceeding to Tiruvannamalai to attend a wedding. The bus was chartered from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation.

Police said both the vehicles were travelling at top speed on a narrow road when the collision occurred. Huge cranes had been pressed into service to retrieve the bus.

The final casualty figures would be known only after it was retrieved, police said.

The injured had been admitted to various hospitals. All the bus passengers were from Gandhi Nagar area in Bangalore, police said.
