PM ready to make statement
in Parliament: Mahajan

In a bid to resolve the impasse in Parliament, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is ready to make a suo motu statement on the Ayodhya issue in both Houses, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said on Monday.

"If the Opposition agrees, the prime minister is ready to make a suo motu statement in both Houses which can later be discussed under appropriate rules," he told reporters after the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the sixth consecutive day.

Opposition members continued to stall business for the sixth day running on the Ayodhya issue. Congress wants a discussion on the resignation demand under a censure motion, while the Samajwadi Party sought the prime minister's resignation for his 'offending' remarks.

Mahajan said the Centre was of the view that the Opposition should accept Speaker G M C Balayogi's suggestion to give fresh notices under appropriate form, which are admissible under the rules.

Pointing out that the Speaker had disallowed the notice on the resignation demand of three chargesheeted ministers moved by Congress under Rule 184 which entails voting, Mahajan said the government was opposed to violation of rules or going against the Speaker's observations in the Lok Sabha.

He expressed concern about the loss of time in the current session due to the deadlock in Parliament saying the 33-day winter session, scheduled to be the longest in 13 years had already lost nine days, including three in the beginning.

"Even before the Speaker comes to the Chair, Opposition members rush to the well of the House. Even the normal courtesy is not being shown to him," Mahajan said.
