Jackals threaten safety at Bhopal airport

It's the day of the jackal at Bhopal airport. Jackals are threatening the safety of aircraft at the Bhopal's Bairagarh airport.

Flights are often delayed due to the presence of jackals on the runway, and once a plane is suspected to have run over one of the creatures.

The wily jackals have foxed aviation officials and the forest department authorities, refusing to fall prey to traps.

The jackals have made the area on both sides of the runway, which has tall grass, as their home.

Feeding on rabbits and rats, they have proliferated over the years.

Chief wildlife warden P K Mishra said that this was the breeding season and heavy rain during the past few days may have filled their dens with water and consequently drawn them out in the open.

Sources at the airport pointed out that the grass has been permitted to grow as it is auctioned every year by the authorities and is a good source of income.

The forest department has advised the airport authorities to cut the grass and install an electrified fence around the airstrip to check the jackal menace.
