The one-man commission headed by Justice P R Gokulakrishnan, probing the November 1997 riots and the February 1998 serial bomb blasts which had rocked Coimbatore, will submit its final report by January 2000.

This was announced by district Collector G Santhanam in a press statement today.

The textile city had witnessed communal riots in the wake of the murder of traffic constable Selvaraj which claimed several lives. Coimbatore also had serial bomb blasts in February 1998.

Santhanam said the commission had already submitted its initial reports in connection with the communal riots. The Tamil Nadu government had accepted it in toto and tabled the same in the state assembly along with the action taken report.

Based on the commission's recommendations the government had paid Rs 10 million towards compensation for 560 petitioners, he said.

Now it had completed the inquest on 320 petitions relating to the serial bomb blasts. Investigation into the remaining 280 petitions was underway and the final report would be submitted by January 2000, Santhanam said.
