Karunanidhi withdrew terrorism bill to get Muslim votes, says Jaya

E-Mail this report to a friend

All India Anna DMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha today alleged that the Karunanidhi government had withdrawn the "controversial" Prevention of Terrorist Activities bill with an eye on the votes of Muslims in the coming mid-term poll to the Lok Sabha.

This had been well understood by the community and it would never fall a prey to the government's "devious game plan", she said in a statement in Madras.

Recalling that she had expressed strong condemnation of the bill when it was introduced in the state assembly last year and urged the President not to give his assent to the "draconian" bill, she said the withdrawal of the bill, though belated, was a victory for the AIADMK.

When the bill was introduced a number of parties and human rights activists were quick to remonstrate with the Karunanidhi government against the bill, but the government had offered needless explanations and indulged in sophistry, she charged.
