Prohibitory orders in force in UP town after riotsProhibitory orders are in force and 20 rioters have been arrested in Jais town of Rae Barelly district in the aftermath of communal clashes in which mobs torched a police outpost and about ten houses yesterday. At least 12 people were injured in the rioting and arson. Deputy inspector-general (Lucknow zone) Arun Kumar Gupta said today that the Provincial Armed Constabulary has been deployed in the town and a strict vigil was being maintained. He, however, dented reports that curfew had been imposed. The trouble started with an altercation between two groups of different communities over the construction of a house. The matter soon got out of hand and the groups began brick-batting and setting fire to houses. The Saidana police outpost was also torched in the rioting, the DIG said. The situation in the town was now peaceful and no untoward incident had been reported since last evening, he said. Senior police and administrative officers were camping in Jais town where the DIG would be reaching to take stock of the situation. UNI
