India to restart fencing Jammu border

A multi-model project to fence and light the Indo-Pak border at Jammu will be initiated shortly.

Home ministry sources said the stalled work on fencing would be restarted. The estimated cost to fence the 180 kilometres is Rs 410 million. The floodlighting, of 195.8 kilometres, would cost another 306.6 million.

Fencing and lighting on 865 kilometres of India's border in Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer sectors of Rajasthan have already been completed.

On 167.60 kilometres in Jaisalmer, work is still under progress. Single-row fence for the remaining 24.03 kilometres border in the sector is also planned. And by the end of 1999, 26 kilometres of border road will also be laid in Rajasthan.

Besides Rajasthan and Gujarat borders, similar work is being carried out on 10 kilometres along the Luni Basin.

In Punjab, the ongoing work on five kilometres of border near Gazniwala and Joginder is expected to be completed by the year-end.

Sources said similar work on the Indo-Bangladesh border would be completed by March 2001 at a revised cost of Rs 10.12 billion. The requisite government approval is being sought, they said.

As on September 30,1998, 2116.17 kilometres of roads, against the approved 2784 kilometres, 16491.99 metres of bridges, against the approved 23,805 metres, and 788.88 kilometres of fence, against the approved 896 kilometres, were constructed, sources said.
