The Madurai police have arrested 44 persons, mostly members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, since last evening in view of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to Tiruchi later today to participate in the Bharatiya Janata Party's two-day state conference.

The police have also taken 24 persons, said to be anti-social elements, into custody for interrogation.

As part of the elaborate security arrangements, 941 vehicles were subjected to checks in the city, but no objectionable material was seized, the sources said.

Additional Director General of Police Kumarasamy supervised the security arrangements in Madurai before leaving for Tiruchi.

Meanwhile, the railway police have been maintaining a constant vigil. All the compartments of Tiruchi-bound trains were being thoroughly checked, railway police sources added.
