Jaya flays DMK for violence against women

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham chief J Jayalalitha today alleged that the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham government in Tamil Nadu is unable to prevent the increasing violence against women in Madras as was evident from various incidents including the death of 32-year-old Durga in an eve-teasing incident on Sunday last.

In a statement, she said Durga's death - months after the death of a college student, Sarika Shah, a victim of eve-teasing -- was shocking.

Chain snatchings, robberies and hooch tragedies had become the order of the day, she alleged.

Jayalalitha claimed that two women -- Alangudi Fardia Begum and Tirubhuvanam Saroja -- had committed suicide following the proceedings initiated by the cooperative department.

Rowdies were emboldened to indulge in atrocious acts like dashing autorickshaws against women and molesting them in public only because of the backing they were reportedly receiving from some DMK elements, she alleged.
