Shimla snoozes under white blanketShimla and the tribal areas in Himachal Pradesh Thursday received the heaviest snowfall of the season. Normal life was disrupted across the region. Heavy snowing started in the morning in the capital town and adjoining areas. The city recorded about 20 cm of snow till 0930 hours. The town, when reports last came in, was under a white blanket. Several roads in Shimla, including the 320-km Hindustan-Tibet, the Shimla-Manali and Shimla-Kalka roads are blocked. Heavy snow was reported in the tribal districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Bharmour, the Pangi valley in Chambal district, the Dhauladhar mountain ranges and the Rohtang Pass as well. Cold wave conditions also prevailed in parts of southwest Rajasthan. Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in north Orissa, Bihar and in parts of southeast Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, Vidarbha and of Tamil Nadu, and were below normal in south Orissa, east Uttar Pradesh and in parts of Telangana, Rayalaseema and of coastal and south interior Karnataka. They were appreciably above normal in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch, and in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, west Uttar Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan and of south coastal Andhra Pradesh, and were above normal in southwest Madhya Pradesh. They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya from where the data were sparse. Rain or snow occurred at many places in Jammu and Kashmir, and at a few places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Rain or thundershowers occurred at many places in Haryana, Punjab and west Rajasthan, and at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and east Rajasthan. Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country. Rain or snow is likely at many places in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and at a few places in hills of west Uttar Pradesh. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the plains of west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and north Rajasthan, and at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
