Karunanidhi wrinkles nose at debate on conversion

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Thursday said he was against a national debate on conversion, as suggested by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and supported by his alliance partner and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalitha.

He said the right of conversion was already enshrined in the Constitution. "(So) there is no need for a debate", he asserted.

Asked about President K R Narayanan's suggestion that members of the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes should be appointed as judges in high courts and the Supreme Court, Karunanidhi said such views were the basic tenets of the Dravidian movement; he had nothing new to add to this.

"My views on this issue are known to you and to the people of the country", he added.
