'Will we make small noises and succumb to the games played by those that don't believe in India, its Constitution or its laws?'

Subject: Vandals

How many people and writers will stand up for the Constitution and the rule of law in India?

Will we make small noises and succumb to the games played by those that don't believe in India, its Constitution or its laws? Or will we demand that the law be enforced and those guilty of vandalising public and private property be punished for it?

Will we demand that those who incite the commission of crimes be punished for their actions, or will we be silent?

Subject: Arrest Thackeray

If it is true that Thackeray was behind the incident of vandalism at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium, then why can't they arrest him for creating a law and order problem?

Already, here in the US, Indians are looking bad because of the Gujarat incident. If this latest incident comes to the attention of the US government, our image will be further tarnished.

Why do our politicians behave in such a cheap manner? At least they can maintain a decent exterior even though they are not good administrators.

Subject: Reaction to the news

I feel that those averse to the Bharatiya Janata Party are just trying to create trouble and increase tensions among various religious groups. It is ridiculous to believe that a responsible government like the BJP would encourage these kind of riots.

With all these our nation is losing in the international scene, let's us keep our differences to ourselves and march forward to the next millennium.

Subject: Indian of the year

Some people have voted for Tendulkar as the Indian of the year. That's good. He played mighty well last year and no doubt it was one fine performance from a truly fine batsman.

But when some of your readers give us crap like he's the only one who holds the country above himself, that kind of makes me sick. I would appreciate if someone could highlight what Tendulkar has done other than lift the sagging spirits of the country in these tough times (which I admit is no small achievement).

What I am trying to drive at is that Tendulkar has to maintain that level of performance to earn the millions that he does. What does it have to do with patriotism is something I fail to understand. If you do want to see an example of full red-blooded patriotism, then surely you don't have to look beyond A P J Abdul Kalam.

Subject: Opinion Polls

I wonder whether opinion polls on the Net mean anything. Seeing the results for "Are the attacks on Christians justified!" question (a rather strange question for an opinion poll), I hope they don't mean anything.

Do a majority of your readers really believe that attack by a mob on anybody can be justified?

Subject: Nadkarni on Bhagwat!

Has the editor of Rediff gone bonkers?

What do you expect from Nadkarni when Bhagwat had petitioned against Nadkarni in 1991?

A stupid waste of time unless you want to pay a handsome compensation for articles written for Rediff to those you like.

Great job, Rediff. Keep it up -- you can still sink the ship.

Subject: Vajpayee is a wimp

It is very easy for the prime minister to dismiss a service chief. If he has guts, let him dismiss one of the many MPs, even from his own party, who are criminals with history sheets.

He finds dismissing a disciplined officer of the armed forces is far easier.

Subject: Krishnamurthy's interview

It is a sad state of affairs when the ruling party admits the government began performing in 1999, after being in power for nine months. It is even sadder that the few politicians who are educated in the country today, like Krishnamurthy, are stating that the BJP will fulfil promises like the building of the Ram temple, when it forms a majority government.

The irony in Krishnamurthy's statement cannot be missed, since he says that this is a government that believes in justice for all and appeasement of none. Is this your version of justice, Krishnamurthy?

Building a Ram temple after demolishing a mosque, and letting the hooligans who performed this cowardly act go scot-free? Furthermore, Krishnamurthy's assertion that he does not want foreign investors looting the country only tells one how little people like him are interested in the welfare of the people.

A country where a infinitesimal proportion of people have basic health coverage, and where the public sector institutions would rather have fewer larger clients to earn the premium from cannot be "welfare".

The best thing that can happen in the New Year for the country would be the collapse of the BJP government. A party that depends on and supports the Shiv Sena and AIADMK has no business talking about justice and good governance!

Krishnamurthy, if you want us Indians to believe that the BJP means good governance, you've got to do better than conducting nuclear tests and accusing China of being the aggressor. No, not even the Ram magic is going to work this time. We are one country and one people. Please keep your communal politics away from the gullible people. Try to build a new India -- do not destroy India or its places of worship any more.

Subject: Shobha Warrier's interview with C Subramaniam

Judging from the questions it is clear that Shobha Warrier is looking to be the second nishan-e-Pakistan after Dilip Kumar.

Subramaniam wasn't talking like a Bharat Ratna. He should return his Bharat Ratna.

No Bharat Ratna can talk of dismembering India. We have given a vast part of our land to create two Muslim countries. Any Muslim in India, be it from Kashmir or any other state, is free to go to Pakistan or Bangladesh. There has never been any restriction on anyone leaving the country.

But let it be clear to one and all of our enemies -- external and internal, particularly the internal ones -- that there will be no further division of India on the basis of anything, religion, language, caste, whatever.

The only problem in Kashmir is about the eviction of Pakistanis from one-third of that state. It can be done only by force. This is not as difficult as our internal enemies make it out to be.

There will be no nuclear war, because the Pakistanis know that while they can destroy some of our cities with their atom bombs, they will not be around too long to celebrate. But a vast majority of India will be around to celebrate the long overdue obliteration of Pakistan.

I was visiting a Ganesh temple in Australia. I saw a white Australian teacher doing pooja and namaskar before Ganesha. I asked him, "Do you come here often?" He said yes. I asked him further, "What makes you come here? He replied, "India, I think, is the cradle of civilisation."

Now David Frawley is writing the same thing that John Trevor (that being his name) does.

The issue of Aryan/Dravidian requires a study on the basis of genetics. DNA profiles of homo sapiens and rigorous archaeological study (not piecemeal ones) could establish the hard facts.

There were two books written by German anthropologists that Jesus was in India for 12 years. Now all this looks good to read. There may be vested interests that may block these studies since their power-centres could erode.

A scientific study done by good scientists should unravel this mystery and once for all expose the truth.

Subject: Chitlangia Interview

Chitlangia has done great service in providing basic education to hundreds of thousands of poor children in the villages and he does not need accolades from anybody.

If Indian Leftist "secularist" politicians can't recognise his selfless service (nishkamya karma) and are not willing to hear him speak, it is their own tragedy. Chitlangia's work will race ahead.

The Leftists will have no one to blame except themselves if they are buried deeper in the next elections, as they keep alienating themselves from the mainstream.

The English media barons use their propaganda machines to help these Leftists attack Hindutva. But they will not escape with their lies. Indian intellectuals will not lie idle forever, nor are the people going to be fooled by this media forever.

Subject: Virendra Kapoor's article on educating Murli Manohar Joshi

The article was good in that it was not critical of the idea of imparting Indian spiritual values to children in schools, but it rather pointed out the errors in the way the idea was presented.

However, I would like to point out a few things that are factually untrue:

It is indeed true that politicisation of the educational institutions has had an adverse impact on the quality of education imparted in universities. When it was pointed out in the article that the West Bengal government has politicised the education atmosphere in the state, I agree 100 per cent.

But it is only to be expected that it should happen since Marxism is inherently a combative ideology. Where else would one pick up new recruits but in colleges and universities? Politics needs to be done away from colleges ultimately. But I fail to understand how the education minister's plan to introduce spiritual education would give a fillip to a further politicisation of college atmosphere. I am not sure if this was pointed out so I withhold further comments but I would like to know why a plan is deemed to exacerbate the politicisation of educational politics by calling it an attempt to "inject the virus of Hindutva at the national level."

Another thing that I would like to point out is that it is unlikely that the prime minister was unaware of the presentation. In fact, there were murmurs of protests in the media even before the day of the conference.

The West Bengal government had already said that it would ask its education minister to stage a walkout if the function began with Saraswati Vandana. Even then, every government document, on policy or otherwise, has a number of copies that are sent out to the PMO, the home ministry, the ministry of finance, the ministry of external affairs and a few other governmental organisations.

Assuming that the agenda for the conference had been kept secret, it is unlikely that the PM did not know about it.

I don't know why Joshi is disliked, even by BJP supporters. I have no opinion about him but I can point out that he was the home minister in the 1996 government. That is to say that in the BJP hierarchy, Joshi probably still occupies the number three spot, if such a numbering indeed exists.

HRD is a very valuable ministry to a party with a clear ideological bent. Keeping that fact in mind, it would be a mistake to presume that Dr Joshi has been sidelined.
