E-Mail this report to a friend

Former Central Bureau of Investigation director Joginder Singh today declared that the CBI had received legal advice from the Union government that there was no case against former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha in connection with the 300,000 US dollars she had received as gift, which was declared under the immunity scheme.

He was addressing a press conference in Madras before calling on Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence to present her with a copy of his controversial book, Inside CBI.

Singh, whose book says a central minister from Tamil Nadu had pressured him to register a case against Jayalalitha, however, declined to disclose the name of the minister.

He said his meeting with Jayalalitha today was arranged by his publisher Sanjay Jha.

Asked whether the meeting would not influence the CBI case pending against her, the former CBI director said it depended on the evidence before the court .

Singh said the CBI should not be used for fighting political battles.
