Red alert on Indo-Pak border

E-Mail this report to a friend

A red alert has been sounded and security along the Indo-Pakistan border beefed up following intelligence reports that militants may strike anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir. The alert has been issued after yesterday's attack on the Special Operation Group office in Srinagar.

Border Security Force sources said this morning that ''anything can happen anywhere, so we are on full alert. But the situation is very much under control.''

Forces along the border have been asked to be on high alert to thwart any attack or infiltration bid by the militants.

A high-level meeting was being held to assess the situation. ''We are ready to face any eventuality,'' a senior administrative officer said.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in and around the Kot Bhalwal jail, where Maulana Azhar Masood, whose release the hijackers of the Indian Airlines plane are seeking, is lodged.

A senior BSF official said that Pakistani Rangers have also stepped up their vigil and security on the border.
