Former president S D Sharma dead

Former president Shankar Dayal Sharma died in New Delhi tonight after a prolonged illness. He was 82.

Dr Sharma, who was suffering from heart and respiratory problems, was undergoing treatment at the Escorts Heart Institute for the past two-and-half months. He died at 2235 hrs, hospital sources said.

Dr Sharma's condition was critical for the past one month and he had recently undergone angioplasty. Doctors attending to him said he suffered a cardiac arrest.

His wife Vimla Sharma, sons Ashutosh Dayal Sharma and Satish Dayal Sharma were by his side when the end came.

The body would be taken to his residence in New Delhi, family sources added.
