HC commutes death sentence in anti-Sikh riots case

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Supreme Court Friday upheld the conviction of two persons for killing four members of a family in East Delhi in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, but commuted into life imprisonment the death sentence awarded to them by the trial court.

A division bench comprising Justices K T Thomas and D P Mohapatra observed in their judgment that four members of a family were butchered by the accused and termed it as ''acts of a most brutal nature''.

Awarding life imprisonment to the accused -- Jaggu and Mannu -- Justice Thomas, who wrote the judgment for the bench, said the accused had no personal enmity with the victims, but were blinded by the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

The Delhi high court had affirmed both the conviction and the sentence as awarded by the trial court to the accused.
