Islamic university to be set up in J&K

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has said eminent Islamic scholars of the country will be associated with the setting up of an Islamic university in Kashmir.

Ulema of dar-ul-uloom Deoband and other Muslim religious institutes of the country will be consulted to prepare a concept paper for the proposed university, Dr Abdullah, who is also chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Auqab Trust, said at a general body meeting of the trust yesterday.

Dr Abdullah said that Eduction Minister Mohammad Shafi, who is also a MAT trustee, would visit Deoband, Delhi and other places to interact with renowned Muslim scholars and evolve a concept paper for establishing of the university. Muslim scholars of the state will also be associated with the task.

The chief minister said that 116 kanals of land have been identified for the proposed university at Ganderbal. The main objective of the university would be to impart Islamic education and carry out research on Islamic literature.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, Works Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, Revenue Minister Abdul Qayoom, general secretary of National Conference Sheikh Nazir Ahmad and imams and care-takers of various trust administered mosques and shrines.
