Cong agrees to a fresh inquiry into 1984 riots

E-Mail this report to a friend

Home Minister L K Advani told the Rajya Sabha today that the Congress had agreed to a fresh inquiry into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Making a statement after a meeting of leaders of all political parties with Rajya Sabha chairman Krishan Kant, Advani said his remarks at a function recently were interpreted in a manner that conveyed that Dr Manmohan Singh, leader of the Opposition, was opposed to such an inquiry. He clarified that what he meant was that the Congress might have reservations on the issue.

Although Krishan Kant had said that he would not allow any clarifications on Advani's statements, several members were on their feet as soon as Advani finished his statement demanding to know whether the government would institute a fresh inquiry and when.

Though Advani did not reply, Jaswant Singh, leader of the House, assured that all aspects of the issue would be considered seriously.
