'Kargil has shown we keep ignoring the history of past confrontation and keep shooting ourselves in the foot'

Subject: bin Laden's Bangladeshi connection

If the ULFA and LTTE can get in touch with bin Laden and take his help, why cannot the Indian army or, for that matter, the US catch bin Laden?

This is in response to the article by Josy Joseph. This whole setup mirrors the fact that we already know. The whole world has become an ungrateful place. I am not trying to be emotional or anything, but, just look at it. The people who owe their Independence to India, are today turning against it. I am saying this based on the facts available to me, that, in 1971 India was instrumental in the formation of Bangladesh.

The reason for this whole thing could be economics, or the lack of any viable economy in Bangladesh is my guess. A problem that India needs to look at seriously.

It is well understood that most Bangladeshi refugees turn to violence, apart from being a drain on the economy. Since now suspect bin Laden is operating from Bangladesh as well, it is high time India seals her borders with Bangladesh. It is a sad state of affairs for Indian security, I hope the government will look into this problem deeply and allocate large funds for anti-terrorism. It might sound crazy, but I guess a poor nation is better compared to a "no-nation-at-all". In that light the government should work fast and cleverly in this direction.

I am sure other readers would also like to know what good work the VHP has done. Also, he says that they have got a good name today. Good name? Says who? Hindus? Not me, His Holiness!

His views about casteism as it exists in Hinduism seem to be based not on facts, but on the insular opinions of a few chosen ones. I wish him all the luck in spreading the good word in the 21st century!

I read the article on RS nominations. I find it funny (perhaps an indication of the time we live in and the inability of the fourth estate to project Indians of diverse vocations and qualities) that Nanaji gets a two liner, Nariman gets a one liner but Lata gets three paragraphs. I am a fan, nay, a devotee of Lata myself but the disproportionate attention by the press to film related issues/people has brought India to the dire straits that it finds itself today.

The information about Shri Nanaji Deshmukh by journalist Tara Shankar Sahay is inaccurate.

First, he never was a Union minister. In fact, the then PM Shri Moraraji Desai did offer him the ministry but he never accepted it, as he preferred to retire from active politics at the age of 60 to start social work.

Secondly, he is mentioned as doing social work in 'a small village near Bhopal'. This is again not true. In fact, he is one of the leading social workers of the country and has started numerous projects in Bihar, UP, MP and Maharashtra. He is the founder of the Chitrakoot Rural Development University. His work in the agriculture sector in Gonda, UP, is very well known and widely appreciated.

You should have asked Shyam Ahuja if any of his carpets were made by children. We must root out this pernicious practice from India, and let children develop.

Subject: Vajpayee's gift to the Bhumihars

This report makes one feel that Dr C P Thakur has been appointed water minister of Bihar. When he is a Cabinet minister, his responsibility is towards the whole nation, not just one state or one caste. It is shameful to think that his being a minister is a gift to Bhumihars. We will never make progress if the media also promotes this kind of an attitude.

I think this is really a wonderful interview. My guru is the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in the South and his Guru was Chandramaouleeshwara. He has averred that all this which has been mentioned by Dr Kak is absolutely true.

Subject: Major Gen Ashok K Mehta -- time to defeat the jihad

General Mehta gives a deserving wake up call to the people and to the Government of India. The Kargil war proved that our politicians are still caught up in the old Nehruvian philosophy of appeasing the Western world even when it is not asked for. I think Mehta's call will not reach to deaf ears of the Indian Government. The government already has shown cowardice by offering time to the Jihadis to put landmines before retreating. That has remained the policy of the Indian government since Independence. Whom do they want to please? Were we not in a war against intruders? How can they be treated like honourable guests? What can we gain from this? Is anybody checking on our so-called scholars and our diplomatic advisers, who are being rewarded for making these kind of policies? Which colleges did they attend, to learn this?

Also after earning the goodwill of Western nations by observing self imposed restraints on the Kargil War and after proving Jihadis as the aggressors, no advantage was taken of this situation, to teach the aggressors a lesson. On the contrary the aggressors were allowed to go with the opportunity to come back some other favourable time in future.

The politics of the Kargil war has shown that we keep ignoring the history of past confrontation and keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Dear Major General Mehta, I am sorry to say this, but unless the army is given membership into scholarly and diplomatic advisory councils, your worthy call will just get lost into air.
