Three farmers killed in police firing in Gujarat

Three people were killed and four injured, three of them seriously, when the police opened fire on a group of farmers protesting against drawing of irrigation water to feed urban areas near Jamnagar in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat.

The entire Saurashtra region is facing a serious water shortage.

The injured included five policemen and three women. They were removed to Jamnagar Irwin hospital where the condition of three of them was described as serious.

Those killed in the police firing have been dentified as: Laxman Bhavanji (55), Bhagvanji Heerji (60) and Kamlesh Raghavji (21).

A large number of policemen, including some platoons of the Special Reserve Police, have been deployed in the area.

When reports last came in people from several villages had gathered at the spot threatening to join the agitation.
