Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Adding a new dimension to the overall situation in the troubled state, the army three days back recovered a missile from a hideout at village Lassana Surankote in Poonch district. This is the first time that a missile has been recovered from the militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior police officer said that acting on specific information the troops raided the hideout. He added that "it was only a missile, without a launcher." The sources said that army experts are examining the missile. A senior police officer says that it could be a shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile.

The sources said that the troops arrested three persons in this connection and they are being questioned. The sources added that the search for deadly weapons has been intensified in the district.

Last year, the Special Task Force of the Jammu and Kashmir police had recovered an anti-aircraft gun from the jungles of Kupwara. The BSF has recovered automatic multiple grenade launchers and 81-mm mortars from the militants.

Meanwhile, at least two civilians were killed and 29 others wounded in a powerful hand grenade explosion near Amirakadal in uptown Srinagar late yesterday. Police said the militants lobbed a hand grenade on a BSF bunker. It missed the target and exploded on the road. This resulted in injuries to bystanders. The injured were rushed to hospital where two civilians succumbed to their injuries.
