Panel to help clear hurdles in 'Tamil medium' plan

The Tamil Nadu government today appointed a five-member committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge S Mohan, to overcome the legal hurdles in making Tamil the compulsory medium of education in the state schools.

Making a suo motu statement in the state assembly under rule 110, Education Minister K Anbazhagan said the other members of the committee are: former Indira Gandhi National Open University vice-chancellor V C Kulandaiswamy, former Bharatidasan University vice-chancellor S Muthukumaran, Professor Tamilannal and Pulavar Era Elankumaran.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had listed the terms of reference for the committee. The state government had already announced that Tamil would be made the compulsory medium of education in the state schools, he added.

The committee would submit its report by May 31, he added.
