Jayalalitha re-elected AIADMK general secretary

J Jayalalitha has been elected unopposed as general secretary of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for another five-year term.

Party presidium chairman and returning officer V R Nedunchezhiyan announced her re-election at a meeting of the party's executive in Madras yesterday.

Since no other nomination was filed for the post of general secretary till September 16, Jayalalitha was as good as elected on September 17, after scrutiny of her nomination. But the formal announcement was only made yesterday.

Jayalalitha became AIADMK general secretary after the party's founder and her mentor M G Ramachandran died in December 1987. She was re-elected to the post in 1993 when she was chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
