How Readers responded to T V R Shenoy's recent columns

Dear Mr Shenoy, India, as of now, is in a state of confusion. People do not know whether they want to see it as a superpower in the near future or not; but they do understand that this can happen in the next century. Generally people complain about unemployment, unclean streets, bad infrastructure and lawlessness. I have seen people from India in the US complaining and ridiculing the situation there in all kinds of meetings and get-togethers. I am sick of it and sometimes get wild about it. These are the same great people who have run away from problems, for a 'better future'. These people have no right to comment about an economy that is 2,000 years old. I feel it is essential to highlight the following to all these people who feel that life in their motherland is not worth living: 1. India is an economy which has an old history. If it can exist for such a long time, it means there is something in it. 2. India has survived under different rulers for so long. Since Independence 50 years ago, it is striving to retain its boundaries. 3. About 50 years ago, there were no good hotels in Madras to accommodate business people. Today there are a few. 4. Where there is a will there is a way. The economically forward nations are again looking towards India since this is the only nation in the world that can live up to the expectations of the business world. Japan and the Asian Tigers can collapse at any time. Russia and other European nations can have problems since they do not have sufficient markets. South America is still to stabilise. China is a good market, but lacks in technically equipped manpower to absorb business. So India is the only destination for all business. India needs a leader who will revolutionise our defence. We need a few things to have strike-capability at any corner of the world:
1. Nuclear Submarines
The leader must make firm policies for insurance, transportation, livestock, agriculture, family planning, social security etc. The leader must ensure that we are no longer dependent on Gulf oil. He should find out alternative fuels. The Internet needs to be improved so that better systems can be developed. Anil

Shenoy is right about the wishful thinking. But what kind of a citizen would wish cancer on the prime minister but an outright traitor? Unfortunately, India has many... Pradip Parekh

I agree with this one hundred per cent. She is just gone MAD and I think the excess amount of fat that she is accumulating has closed her vision. A person like Jayalalitha should be sent to the Agra Mental Cell. Shashi

As usual, TVRS has put into words what is in the mind of most Indians. Excellent column. The US has to learn that it cannot continue with this hypocrisy for long. Some day it has to pay the bills for this too. Vinod Mathews |
