Karunanidhi scoffs at Jaya's charge of not visiting riot-hit areas

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary J Jayalalitha seemed to be suffering from 'selective amnesia', as her stand over a chief minister visiting areas affected by caste clashes has changed now.

Karunanidhi, who completed a day-long-tour of the affected areas in the riot-hit Ramanathapuram district yesterday, in a statement in Madras pointed out that when Jayalalitha was the chief minister she had stated that the head of the government need not go to every nook and corner whenever clashes broke out, but could control the situation by sitting right there, had now found fault with him for not visiting the affected areas immediately after the clashes.

Reacting to Jayalalitha's demand that he should step down if he could not visit the affected areas and call upon the two warring groups and bring about an amicable settlement, Karunanidhi pointed out how Jayalalitha took six months to visit Tirunelveli district which had been affected by caste clashes leaving 45 people dead following the Kodiankulam incidents in August 1995.
