Veerappan injured in encounter with STF

Elusive forest brigand Veerappan and two of his associates were injured in an encounter with the special task forces of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka during the stepped up combing operations in the Kadambur area in the Sathyamangalam forests in the last four days.

Veerappan, who sustained bullet injuries on the head, and his associates might have crossed over to the Palar forests near Mettur or to MM hills in Karnataka, STF sources said in Salem today.

Under the leadership of Inspector General of Police P Kalimuthu, 10 teams comprising more than 10,000 police personnel, were engaged in the combing operations.

Movement of vehicles in the areas beyond Mettur was banned in view of the intensive combing operations, the sources said.

All the escape routes from the forests had been blocked and the local police were instructed to maintain a strict vigil and check hospitals near the forests, the sources added.
