E-Mail this report to a friend

Popular music composer A R Rehman, thespian Sivaji Ganesan, superstar Rajnikanth and actresses Gauthami and Vijaya Santhi were among more than 20 film stars and politicians who have been provided security by the Madras police following threatening calls received by them from Muslim fundamentalists.

City police commissioner K Kalimuthu, addressing his routine weekly press conference, said armed policemen have been posted at the residences of these artistes as part of the security measures in view of the threatening calls.

While personal security guards had been provided for Rehman, Gauthami and Vijaya Santhi, who had campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the last general elections, armed security guards were posted at the residence of other artistes, he said.

Senior police officials would review the situation regularly and the areas were kept under surveillance by patrol police, he added.

BJP state unit general secretary L Ganesan was among the party leaders who had also been provided with security, he added.
