Defamation case against Jaya quashed

A defamation suit filed by former Tamil Nadu chief minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary J Jayalalitha against state Health Minister Arcot N Veerasamy was dismissed by a city court today.

In her private complaint before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R Bhanumathy, Jayalalitha had submitted that Veerasamy, in a statement, had alleged that she was the kingpin behind the serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore on February 14 and the subsequent seizure of explosives from the banned Al Umma activists. This had tarnished her image among the people and her partymen, she argued.

CMM Bhanumathy dismissed the suit, saying that for people in public life it was common to be faced with such criticism. The suit could not be admitted for trial, she ruled.
