Petroleum minister demands CBI probe into Karunanidhi's assets

Union Petroleum Minister Vazhapadi K Ramamurthy today demanded that the Centre order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the assets owned by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and constitute a special court to try the charges levelled against him by All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha.

In a statement issued from Delhi, Ramamurthy also demanded a probe into the allegations regarding the private television channel empire reportedly owned by Karunanidhi's relatives and the sale of Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank shares to their benamis.

He alleged that Karunanidhi's son, M K Alagiri, who lives in Madurai, was running a fiefdom in the southern districts of the state. Karunanidhi was trying to hide his corrupt past by levelling charges against Opposition leaders, the minister alleged.
