Nayanar promises to constitute Lok Ayukta by April

The Lok Ayukta will come into being in Kerala from April, Chief Minister E K Nayanar has announced in the state assembly.

He said an ordinance to constitute the Lok Ayukta, to deal with corruption cases, would be promulgated after the conclusion of the current assembly session on April 16.

The new body would replace the Kerala Public Men's Corruption (Investigation and Inquiries) Commission. Though the Commission's term expired on March 10, 1997, it had not been reconstituted.

The Commission has so far disposed of 62 cases, Nayanar said.

The chief minister said the details of the proposed body would be worked out in consultation with the leader of the Opposition and judges of the state high court.
