Mob attacks TN MLA's house following death of teenaged girl

A mob, enraged over the death of a teenaged girl under mysterious circumstances, went on the rampage and attacked the house of a DMK legislator, besides damaging six buses at Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

The Virudhunagar police told UNI that the girl, Subbulakshmi, a ninth standard student, had been missing for the past four days and finally her body was found in a well on Sunday morning.

Immediately, a group of people resorted to a road blockade near the town bus-stand demanding the arrest of those who were behind the incident. Another group, wielding sticks and sickles, ransacked some shops in the vicinity while yet another group of people hurled stones at the house of Sattur MLA, Vijayakumar, and set fire to a thatched pandal in front of his house. However, the MLA was not in his house at the time of the incident. The mob also attacked some buses, and damaged six vehicles.

The police then resorted to a cane-charge to disperse the agitators.

On receiving the information, Madurai range Deputy Inspector General of Police M Ganesan and Virudhunagar police superintendent Tripathi rushed to the spot. At least six people have been arrested in connection with the incidents.

The body was cremated after a post-mortem was performed.

A police posse has been posted in the town, and the Rapid Action Force has been pressed into service.

Meanwhile, two special teams have been formed to nab the culprits behind the girl's murder, Ganesan said.
