Subject: Mr C Subramaniam/disintegration

If anybody thinks that a disintegrated India will survive as prosperous free states -- that is wishful thinking. When it happens, large parts will be taken over by powerful China and the people will be driven out, the rest will be taken over by "powerful, proud in conquest and jihad minded Pakistan" in swift action. Tamil Nadu will be ruled by Sultan or Nawabs. Millions may die in internal fighting with Pakistan or other's help. The final dream of conquest will be fulfilled. Indians will become just like American Indians, Hawaiians and original Australians in time.

If India disintegrates, nobody will stop this. The loss of one powerful nation with such diversity will make other dominant powers more happy -- one less to deal with. Good luck!

We are discussing big issues like presidential/parliamentary form of government. What does it mean to a voter who probably cannot read/write his/her own name? I think the basic problem is only education. If people are sufficiently educated to decide from right or wrong, we will not see corrupt politicians, or criminals in this system and not call the current system a failure. Today not one politicians has to prove his worth. No one cares as each one of them is equally corrupt.

Mr Subramaniam's view should be taken very seriously by the Government of India. I think his proposal of limiting the number of parties to 4 or 5 should be debated in Parliament. I also think that every party should declare their prime ministerial candidate before the election, so that people know the person who is going to lead them beforehand. Unfortunately, our MPs are so ignorant that all they care about is their own future. We can only hope that people like Mr Subramaniam get elected to the Lok Sabha.

Subject: Shobha Warrier interviews Subramaniam

In her interview with C Subramaniam, Shobha Warrier asks, "Do you see shades of fascism in Advani's opinion about the Presidential system?"

I am used to people like her drop the words, communalism, fundamentalism, fascism whenever the BJP or its party members are referred to. This one is a special one. It takes a special class of such tawdry reporting to conjure up this one though.

I mean what is with these pretentious English educated Indian class? Have they been so brain-washed that they can't think straight for a moment? This class of reporters remind me of Nazi propaganda. Slander them once, slander them a hundred times and slander them a thousand times. Surely, one of them is likely to stick.

I am disgusted with these brain-dead English reporters who wear the BJP-bashing badge on their sleeves to impress the world with their contribution in fighting the nightmare of "communalism"

They make me retch.

Subject: C Subramaniam's interview by Shobha Warrier

Here comes a old timer from the locked closet. He thinks the Presidential system is an uncharted sea. The old timers are afraid of any changes because they perceive an unknown threat. As far as a parliamentary system of democracy is concerned, we should have some educational requirements before one can vote. Also some character and educational norms for those standing for elections. The judiciary should be strong and agencies like the CBI should be directly under the Supreme Court.

Subramaniam is right in seeing a breakdown of India into different states under different kingpins. We in Maharashtra have the best of the best goons, in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar we have the-not-so sophisticated goondas. Shame on our parliamentary system, it just does not work.

India should seriously think about a Presidential form of government, open up the press and protect the press vigorously against attack by political thugs. Openness in any form of government is beneficial to the people, any form of corruption should be dealt with a death blow. Steal from their country and cry Satyameva Jayate.

Subject: C Subramaniam's view....

I wholeheartedly agree with the views expressed by Mr Subramaniam. However, I am totally pessimistic whether any of these good ideas can be implemented in India: politicians and politics have descended to such abysmal depths that it may be very difficult to get out of the existing morass. The huge masses of illiterate and indifferent voters, led by corrupt and selfish scoundrels, can take the country only in one direction -- down.

I would like to submit the following for consideration by the readers of this column. India is at present threatened by inimical forces from within and without; one can say that the country is facing a national crisis. It would be in the interests of the country to have a stable and powerful government at the Centre. Vajpayee and the BJP can demonstrate their statesmanship at this crucial juncture by forming a coalition government with the other leading party, the Congress. The other coalition parties that are at present in the government can all be unceremoniously kicked out; they have been more of a nuisance than a help in conducting the affairs of state.

The coalition of the BJP and Congress will be powerful, stable and unshakable. It can get rid of all the corrupt politicians in the country and save it from disaster. It can amend the Constitution as Mr Subramaniam has suggested and put the country on a path towards prosperity. This idea of a coalition with parties with different ideologies is not new: during the Second World War, such a coalition government of the Tories (led by Winston Churchill) and the Liberals (with Attlee et al) saved Britain from annihilation by the Nazis.

In my humble view, such a time has come for India too.

Subject: 'India may disintegrate like Russia'

Mr C Subramaniam's article briefly discussed many crucial problematic areas in the country's Constitution. This article also suggested, "we cannot have this show going on for long unless we have taken steps to rectify our country's Constitution". Also, the ruling party has some good intentions with regard to this matter.

However my point is, we have to have more and more statesmen and visionaries in various fields involved in this matter of reviewing the Constitution and functioning of India as a single unified power. This is because we need to think about all aspects of India's problems while dealing with constitutional issues and need to have a clear vision of the path ahead to enter the 21st century.

Please bring in more columns like this and suggest solutions from the minds of great visionaries, to build a unified and strong India.

Very timely, useful and thoughtprovoking, specially coming from a veteran freedom fighter like Mr Subramaniam.

How about an interview with Mr Gujral on Indo-Pak-China relations, particularly on forming an economic zone?
