Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 23:10:53 -0400 Please send this story to Mr Clinton and Ms Madeleine Albright! They are the ones who can, with a straight face, claim that China is for non-proliferation when a ship loaded with arms was en route to Pakistan according to US intelligence. Where are these human rights advocates now when their friends from Pakistan are killing innocent people?
Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 11:58:58 +0800 Why cannot we develop all this technology here in our labs and academic institutions? Sponsor the projects, give all this funding to research labs and academic institutions, give a free hand to professors, scientists and engineers (remove the clerical and bureaucratic hurdles, and stop treating everybody as thieves), and see the results. If others are doing it we can do it better, only thing needed is will, leadership and trust. It is going to help everybody. Developed technology is going to be cheaper and will provide us with a base for research in the long run and strengthen our academic institutions. By way of funding research in technical institutions defence can contribute a lot and gain much more in return. Give it a try. Vigyani

Instead of upgrading those tanks and spending more money on its upgrade than the cost of the tank itself, buy or manufacture newer tanks. If they go against M1A1 Abrams (Pakistan has it) or T-80 (China), they will be blown to bits. We should buy T-80 tanks or induct MBT Arjun quickly.

It will be nice to hear more about his wonderful and valiant expeditions. Could he ski through through terrain? Did he use snow shoes with nets? My husband and I are avid skiers, and we wish we could X-country ski over to those hot springs. Anjali Fields

Date sent: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 05:01:40 PDT I enjoyed this article very much and am wondering if Colonel Taylor has written any more on his career that we might access? Garfield Mr McFayden: Please do read Colonel Taylor's 'The army commanders had no say in the IPKF operation. Wars are not fought this way'
Date sent: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 08:40:24 -0700 It is the brave jawans and junior officers who endure this every day of their life, while politicians in Delhi are looting the defence budgets by way of Bofors and gun deals with the former Yugoslavia. Maybe one day the army will have had enough and send our fat politicians to the inhospitable border towns for a retreat, so that we can put some honesty in their character, if they ever survive this endurance. I am proud of our present Defence Minister Fernandes. He has made an attempt to travel to all fronts, unlike our former defence minister Mulayam Yadav. Many jawans and officers leave because of this endless call of duty to hostile postings without proper equipment, food, snowmobiles or promotions and monetary compensations. India will end up with a good number of people seeking a job in the armed forces, but few soldiers who can fight. Give these brave men and women a big hand and keep them happy and healthy.
Date sent: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 22:00:39 EDT The report was incisive in that it attributes sources to a reputable magazine (Jane's Defence). The size of India's nuclear arsenal is surprisingly big.....well, India is a legitimate nuclear power.
Date sent: Fri. 19 Jun 1998 13:00:20 Dear Ms Priya Ganapati, I have been directed by Shri B K Syngal, CMD, VSNL, to convey you his denial to the report titled "If I am not granted an extension, I will sue the Government" carried in the June 17 edition of Rediff Infotech section. Shri Syngal categorically denies this statement wrongfully attributed to him. What he has said is: "LEGALLY, IT WILL BE A DISAPPOINTMENT." You are requested to give an appropriate coverage to this denial under intimation to Shri Syngal at his email address -- syngal@giasbm01.vsnl.net.in With regards
R K Khushu
Date sent: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 20:38:26 EDT It seems VSNL is being pushed around by different interests. The information regarding Syngal's management style is actually a very positive one, it seems like he is a can do guy. Chowdhary on the other hand seems to be a meddler, who even after moving out is trying to interfere in the functioning of VSNL. Extremely interesting article, I am surprised Chowdhary has leaked information regarding VSNL's performance to Rediff. Is it not illegal to disclose proprietary information regarding an organisation? Also, I am sure Syngal has gotten some favours for his kids and has hired ex- employees as consultants, there is nothing new in that. American firms do this regularly -- it's called building effective networks. On the other hand, if either Syngal or Chowdhary are involved in financial irregularities then it's a different case.
Date sent: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 18:15:32 -0400 B K Syngal should not be given an extension because he is an anachronism. An aberration who is clearly outdated. After trying to ensure VSNL's monopoly on phone services (much to the detriment of Indian consumers), and bungling on major national infrastructural issues such as earth station construction, Internet services, VSAT services etc, this attempt by Syngal to hold on to his job is another example of how ineffective government appointees can be. We need a major reform in the telecommunications area, and Syngal will stonewall any attempts made to privatise VSNL and empower private operators and ISPs. He should retire gracefully instead of getting involved in a mudslinging match with his detractors.

Date sent: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 14:24:36 -0400 Beautiful. Mr Gangadhar hits point blank, an article away from politics and cricket (though my favourite). I really appreciate the way you tried to convey the present state, hope Rediff carries some more articles apart from the regulars, keep it up. Bharat
Date sent: Tue, 16 Jun 1998 15:11:00 PDT Such coverage and critique of Indian movies is very essential. Nowadays, Indian directors come up with stories that portray a very bad picture of our defence and security folks. I am sure if this move was not from ABCL, it would have easily escaped criticism even from the Army folks. Sai
