Controversy over Bachchan's Major Saab resolved

The controversy over Major Saab starring appears to have been settled. The film, with all changes recommended by the ministry of defence and the army is set to hit the screens on June 26, as scheduled.

The film directed by Tinnu Anand and produced by Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited stars, besides Bachchan himself, Ajay Devgan and Sonali Bendre. The film ran into trouble when the army and the ministry of defence raised objections about the way life at the National Defence Academy was presented and distortions of fact.

Bachchan, in a statement issued today, said the film, a commercial one, in the realm of fiction and make belief. Even though the story is set partially at the NDA at Khadvasala, the incidents shown do not reflect what happens at this institution, he said, adding that certain sequences may appear to violate the ethos and tradition of the NDA. But the producers meant no disrespect either to the institution or any units or regiments of the army and the army personnel, he said.

''We respect the sanctity and integrity of this premier institution of the country. We take great pride in the discipline, the sense of responsibility, the patriotism that is inculcated by the academy in the future officers of the armed forces, who we hold in high esteem,'' he said.
