Jaya puts off Friday's Delhi visit

All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha, who was invited by Union Home Minister L K Advani for talks in New Delhi on June 19 to discuss her demand for the dismissal of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, has put off her visit, AIADMK sources said.

Sources said Jayalalitha wanted to meet both Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Advani on June 19, and since the prime minister would be away from Delhi that day, Jayalalitha had postponed her visit to a date later this month.

Advani had invited Jayalalitha for talks in Delhi at the height of the pressure mounted by the AIADMK and its allies to dismiss the DMK government by staging walkouts and boycotting Parliament.

The BJP's allies in Tamil Nadu had also raised a fresh demand for intervention in Sri Lanka on humanitarian grounds, causing fresh problems for the Centre.

Jayalalitha, by her decision to put off the visit, appeared to give the impression that she was prepared to wait and would not precipitate matters as of now.

This mood was reflected in the statement of Union Petroleum Minister Vazhapadi K Ramamurthy, whose Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress is an ally of the AIADMK, that the AIADMK and its allies would not withdraw support to the Vajpayee government over the question of dismissal of the DMK government.
