Law and order situation satisfactory, says TN governor

Tamil Nadu Governor Fatima Beevi, who met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani today, said the law and order situation in state was satisfactory, giving a new turn to the raging controversy.

Replying to a volley of questions regarding the overall law and order situation in the state immediately after her meeting with Advani at Parliament House, she said, "It is all right." She parried all other questions and declined to be dragged into a controversy on the issue.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre is under pressure from its coalition constituent, the All India Anna DMK, to dismiss the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government on the ground that the law and order situation in the state has collapsed. The central government which had sent a team to Madras last month to assess the situation, had also concluded that the situation in the state was normal. But the official of the home ministry, Ashok Kumar, was subsequently transferred.

Incidentally, Fatima Beevi had a lengthy meeting with AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha in Madras before leaving for Delhi.

Talking to newspersons later, Advani maintained that his meeting with the Tamil Nadu governor was a routine one and that no political significance need be attached to it.
