India clinches deal for Russian aircraft carrierIndia's long negotiated deal to buy the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov has finally been clinched. The contract in this connection was signed in Moscow on Friday by representatives of the India and Russian defence ministries. The signing of the contract coincided with Indian naval chief Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat's visit to Moscow. India will receive the 44,500 ton Admiral Gorshkov by 2000. The warship is currently undergoing some alterations to suit the Indian navy's requirements. Admiral Bhagwat's visit is stated to be in preparation for Russian President Boris Yeltsin's visit to New Delhi later this year. Russia and India are expected to sign another long-term agreement for military and technological co-operations up to 2010, Indian Ambassador Ronen Sen said last night. UNI
