Muslim sects clash in Lucknow

Additional contingents of Rapid Action Force and police were deployed in the old city area of Lucknow following clashes between members of two Muslim sects at Ghanta Beg Gaddayia this morning before the Madhe-Sahaba procession was to pass.

The trouble started when followers of one sect assembled to unfold their flags as part of the ritual. This was objected to by members of the other sect, resulting in stone-throwing from both sides.

Officials source said at least one youth was seriously injured in the stone throwing that lasted about one-and-a-half hours.

Senior district and police officials, including the district magistrate and the district police chief, rushed to the spot.

The situation has been described as ''highly tense but under control.''
