Four killed as ultras clash

Four people, including two women, were killed, two injured and 130 houses burnt down during clashes between Zomi and Kuki militants in Manipur's trouble-torn Churachandpur district yesterday.

Police today said suspected Zomi Revolutionary Army militants attacked Phaimol Kuki village and killed three people. The Kuki guards returned fire, killing one person believed to be a Zomi ultra in the exchange.

ZRA activists attacked another Kuki village, firing several rounds. Kuki volunteers retaliated. One person was injured in the firing. In the subsequent arson, 50 houses were burnt down in the village, about 20 km away from Churachandpur station.

Later, the militants were involved in another gunbattle at a village close to the Churachandpur police station. One person suffered bullet injuries and the ultras burnt down about 80 houses.

Meanwhile, suspected Kuki militants kidnapped a Kuki businessman on January 4 and demanded Rs 300,000 as ransom.
