B P Maurya has won an election from here, in 1962 when he contested on the RPI ticket. The closest he came again to representing this Muslim constituency was in 1984, when he came second to the Congress's Usha Rani. In 1989 the JD's Satyapal Malik won the seat, before his party lost to the BJP's Sheeladevi Gautam in 1991. Gautam retained the seat in 1996, defeating Abdul Khaliq of the BSP by 91,000 votes. The Congress's Srinath Chaturvedi was in third place, winning 61,767 votes, while former Satyapal Malik, contesting on the SP ticket, could manage to win only 40,789 votes.
