UP assembly gears up to vote for CM

The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha is all geared up for the unprecedented event, the 'composite' test of strength between Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and Loktantrik Congress leader Jagdambika Pal tomorrow.

For the first time in the history of the state, a vote of confidence will be obtained by a chief minister by an open ballot system with the ballot box being kept before the dais of Speaker Kesrinath Tripathi.

After making all arrangements for Thursday's trial of strength, in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court, Tripathi convened an all-party meeting for apprising the leaders of the various legislature parties with the procedure to be adopted in the special sitting of the house.

According to him, immediately after the house assembles at 1100 hours tomorrow, Vande Matram will be recited and immediately after that the motion of confidence will be taken up for voting.

In New Delhi, meanwhile, the prime minister's office denied that I K Gujral had conveyed any message to UP Governor Romesh Bhandari on the recent political developments.

The denial came in the wake of reports to the effect that Bhandari had been advised to step down.

An official spokesman said no such communication had been sent to the governor from the prime minister.

It was also stated that the prime minister had spoken to K R Narayanan yesterday, and will attend to the matter relating to the letter received from the President.
