Court reinstates Kalyan SinghThe Uttar Pradesh governor's order dismissing the Kalyan Singh government in the state was stayed by a division bench of the Allahabad high court today, which directed the status quo ante to be maintained. The governor is at liberty to summon the assembly and direct Kalyan Singh to seek a vote of confidence, Justice B Dixit and Justice D K Seth said in their interim order. The reasons for passing the interim order will be given later, the judges said in their judgment. Following the Allahabad high court decision, Kalyan Singh assumed charge as Uttar Pradesh chief minister this evening. Singh told newspersons that he was the chief minister on February 21 and was assuming the charge since the high court had restored the status quo-ante. Meanwhile, Jagdambika Pal, who has thus been forced out of a post he was sworn-in less than 48 hours ago, will file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against the judgment of the Allahabad high court staying the governor's order dismissing the Kalyan Singh government. Leader of the Congress legislature party Pramod Tiwari said the petition was being drafted and would be filed soon. Pal said the high court order was meant for the governor., and that he would act on the governor's directive in this regard.
